Introduction
Strength, fitness, stress relief, energy, confidence, and pride—all are directly linked to
the sport of running. The more we know about how the human body works, both men-
tally and physically, the more we understand the many ways running can enrich our
lives. By re-working your weekly schedule to allow for two and half hours of running
each week, you can transform your life. Like all new things, becoming a runner may
seem intimidating at first, but regardless of your age or your current level of physical
fitness, it can be done successfully.
I began running in college as a way to
stay in shape. Over the years, I have learned
that not only do I look better when I run, but
I have the drive and confidence to conquer
whatever lies ahead of me each day. I run
not just to stay physically healthy, but emo-
tionally healthy as well. Running relieves
stress and gives you energy. I have replaced
my after work snack with an after work run,
and it has made every part of my day better.
I know first-hand about the challenges
and obstacles that new runners face. I also
know how rewarding the sport can be. Re-
searching the sport of running to write this
guide has validated my personal experiences and allowed me to back up my anecdotal
evidence with solid scientific study. As you read, I hope you become inspired and em-
powered with the knowledge of how to run safely and successfully. Happy trails!
