Birth to one year 9
Q: Ashley is now 9 months old and was progressing with sounds
and babbling, but this seems to have stopped.
A: Language acquisition doesn’t develop in a smooth way. Children
seem to have a burst of language and then consolidate what they
learn. Often this consolidation time is when they will be focused
on listening, so keep talking. Nine month old children are usually
crawling and beginning to pull themselves up. When children are
learning complex physical skills like these, the other skill areas take
lesser priority and will not be as big a focus. Language acquisition
needs to be viewed over a longer period of time to detect if there are
any problems.
