It is important to limit the amount of television exposure children
receive and thus extend the opportunity for quality play and language
experiences to occur.
? How’s it going?
Q: When my husband plays with Siena, he throws her up in the air
and pushes her up and down our passage way in a cardboard box. I
have explained about letting her lead the play but he doesn’t get it.
A: Men tend to play with children in different ways to women, men
are more physical; women tend to use more language. The rough
and tumble play that men do with children is very important. The
play activity you have described is very important, it will help
Siena manage her emotions, build her confidence and help build
trust between father and daughter.
Q: Jamie will only let me read Thomas the Tank Engine books. We
read the same books over and over and over again. How do I get him
interested in other stories?
A: This is really normal; my own son was obsessed with pirates for
18 months. Reading the same books over and over again, although
not that interesting for you, is very beneficial for Jamie. He will
know the story well and will be able to predict the text. Encourage
him to participate and ‘read’ a specific part of the book with you, for
example a key phrase that is repeated throughout the text. Jamie
will broaden his interests and move on from Thomas at some stage.
